Greylag Geese

 14-04-04 (couple of days old):

During a trip to our grandmother we discovered that there were several families of greylag geese in the grass near a road. We remembered that it had been in the local newspaper last year. So the greylag geese had returned to raise their young at the same place this year. We decided to come back later with our camera to photograph the baby greylag geese.

The first time we photographed them they must have been only a couple of days old. They had just left their nest and were still very small. You could hardly see the baby geese in between the long grass. The parents were really alert for danger. As soon as the parents see any danger they warn all the baby geese with alarm calls. The baby geese sprint to the water then were they are safe to most of their predators.

As soon as the parents noticed us they decided to play at safe and they went into the water together with their young. The swam a little bit before the jumped on the shore again. This time we were able to have a good look at them and take some nice pictures, until two dogs disturbed them.
 15-04-04 (the next day):

We returned to the greylag geese to make some more pictures because yesterday the dogs scared the geese away. The geese were still as small and cute as the day before.

Today another happy family of greylag geese had joined the other two families so a total of three families was feeding in the grass now. As soon as they saw us they decided to go into the water.

After an alarm call of one of the adults the baby goose formed a dense flock in the water. On the picture above their are 15 baby geese from at least two families.
